How to use the circle generator
- Pick a diameter. Type the width in blocks or tap a preset. Untick Perfect circle to set a different height for an oval.
- Choose a style. Thin uses the fewest blocks. Thick fills the diagonal steps so mobs and water cannot slip through corners. Filled gives a solid disc for floors and domes.
- Build row by row. Start at row 1 and place the columns listed for each row. Click a row in the list or on the grid to mark it done.
Worked example: a 7 block circle
A 7 by 7 thin circle has 16 blocks. Rows 1 and 7 have 3 blocks in columns 3 to 5. Rows 2 and 6 have 2 blocks, in columns 2 and 6. Rows 3, 4 and 5 have 2 blocks each, in columns 1 and 7. That gives the familiar shape with a flat side of 3 blocks on each edge.
| Diameter | Thin | Thick | Filled |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 16 | 24 | 37 |
| 10 | 28 | 36 | 80 |
| 15 | 40 | 56 | 177 |
| 21 | 56 | 80 | 349 |
| 32 | 88 | 124 | 812 |
| 50 | 140 | 196 | 1,976 |
| 100 | 280 | 396 | 7,860 |
Odd or even diameter?
An odd diameter, such as 21, has a single center block, which is easiest when you want a pillar, beacon or doorway exactly in the middle. An even diameter, such as 20, has a center of 2 by 2 blocks. Pick odd unless you need a 2 wide center.
How the circle is worked out
Each block is kept if its center falls inside the ellipse that fits your width and height. For outlines, only blocks on the edge of that shape are kept. Thin keeps blocks that touch the outside on a flat side, so the corners connect diagonally. Thick also keeps blocks that touch the outside at a corner, so every block in the ring shares a full face with the next.
Tips for domes and towers
- For a tower, repeat the same circle on every layer.
- For a dome, build a filled or thick circle on each layer and make the diameter a little smaller each time you go up. This page makes one layer at a time.
- Mark the center first with a temporary block, then count out along the rose lines.
Questions
How many blocks are in a Minecraft circle?
It depends on the size and style. A 21 block circle uses 56 blocks as a thin outline, 80 as a thick outline and 349 filled. The block count above updates as you change the size.
Should I use an odd or even diameter?
Use an odd diameter if you want one block in the exact center. Even diameters have a 2 by 2 block center, which suits a 2 wide doorway or path.
What is the difference between thin and thick?
A thin outline joins at the corners, so blocks on the curve only touch diagonally. A thick outline adds blocks so each one shares a face with the next, which stops water and mobs getting through.
Can I make an oval or ellipse?
Yes. Untick Perfect circle and set a different width and height. The grid, block count and row list all follow the oval.
Does it work for Java and Bedrock?
Yes. Blocks are the same size in both editions, so the plan works in Java, Bedrock and any other block building game.
What is the largest circle I can make?
Up to 250 blocks wide and 250 tall. Bigger plans still work in the PNG download, which is drawn at full size.
