How to make random teams
- Add the names. Paste a list with one name per line, or type them separated by commas.
- Choose how to split. Pick a number of teams, such as 4, or a number of people per team, such as 3.
- Press Make teams. Not happy, or need a fresh draw for the next round? Press it again for a new random split.
- Copy the teams to paste into a chat, slide or class notes.
Worked examples
| Names | Setting | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | 3 teams | 3 teams of 4 |
| 10 | 3 teams | 1 team of 4 and 2 teams of 3 |
| 11 | 4 per team | 3 teams: one of 3 and two of 4 |
| 25 | 5 per team | 5 teams of 5 |
When you choose people per team and the names do not divide evenly, the tool makes enough teams for everyone, then spreads the names so no team is more than one person bigger than another. Nobody is left alone in a team of one.
How the shuffle works
The names are shuffled with the Fisher Yates method using your browser's built in random number generator, so every order is equally likely. The shuffled names are then dealt out one at a time, like cards, to keep team sizes even.
Tips
- Duplicate names are kept, and the tool warns you so you can tell two people with the same name apart, such as Sam R and Sam T.
- Use custom team names like Red and Blue for sports days or house points.
- The names stay on this page. They are not saved or sent anywhere, so reloading the page clears them.
Questions
How do I split a list of names into random teams?
Paste the names with one per line, choose the number of teams or people per team, and press Make teams. Press it again any time for a new random draw.
Are the teams really random?
Yes. Names are shuffled with the Fisher Yates method using your browser's secure random number generator, so every arrangement is equally likely.
What happens if the names do not divide evenly?
Team sizes are kept as close as possible, and never differ by more than one. For example, 10 names in 3 teams gives one team of 4 and two teams of 3.
Can I make random groups instead of teams?
Yes. Set Call them to Groups and the results are labelled Group 1, Group 2 and so on. It works the same way for class groups, breakout rooms or project groups.
Can I name the teams or pick captains?
Yes. Open More options to type your own team names, one per line, and tick the box to pick a random captain for each team.
Are the names I enter saved?
No. The names stay in this page in your browser and are not uploaded or stored. Copy the teams before you close the page if you want to keep them.
