Making a server icon, start to finish

  1. Choose a picture or GIF. A logo, a photo or an animated GIF. PNG, JPG, WebP and GIF all work.
  2. Crop it square. Fill crops a square: drag to move, Zoom to go in, or use the arrow keys. The dashed circle is what Discord shows, so keep the important part inside it. Fit keeps the whole picture and leaves clear corners.
  3. Pick a size. 512 × 512 is plenty for every place Discord shows the icon. 1024 × 1024 is there if you want a master copy.
  4. Make the icon. Pictures update on their own; GIFs take a few seconds. Check the round previews and tap Download. The steps to add it show under the result.

Discord server icon rules (checked October 25, 2026)

Animated iconBoost Level 1 (2 boosts)Server Boosting FAQ
File sizeNot publishedHow do I create a server

Discord does not publish a file size cap for server icons, so this page keeps them under 10 MB, the same as avatars. That is our own safe margin, not a Discord number. If the upload dialog shows a different rule, trust the dialog.

Two test files, two icons

We ran the page's own samples through it on October 25, 2026 in desktop Chrome and checked each download for its real pixel size and byte count.

InputIcon outWhat it took
PNG, 360 × 280, 5.5 KB512 × 512 PNG, 121.9 KBCenter square crop, scaled up about 1.8 times
GIF, 160 × 160, 16 frames, 71 KB512 × 512 GIF, 510 KB, all 16 framesLossless packing only, under 1 second

Worked example. The sample picture is 360 × 280. Fill takes the largest square that fits, 280 × 280, from the middle, and scales it up to 512 × 512, which is about 1.8 times. The page warns about that stretch, because a small source looks soft when blown up. Starting from a picture at least 512 pixels on its short side avoids it.

Designing for a circle at 48 pixels

Most people see your icon as a 48 pixel circle in the server list, next to dozens of others. Bold shapes and one or two colors read best at that size. Thin text and detailed photos turn to mush. If your logo has a wordmark, use only the symbol for the icon and put the full name in the server banner instead.

Where this falls short

Making a matching set? The Discord banner resizer handles profile and server banners, the emoji maker makes custom emoji, and the Discord tools page lists every limit.

Questions about Discord server icons

What size should a Discord server icon be?

At least 128 x 128 pixels. Discord's own server setup guide says the minimum is 128 x 128 and suggests cropping in multiples of 128, so this page makes 512 x 512 by default, or 1024 x 1024 if you want extra sharpness. Discord shows the icon as a circle.

Can a Discord server icon be animated?

Yes, with a GIF. Discord's Server Boosting FAQ lists an animated server icon as a Boost Level 1 perk, which takes 2 boosts. Choose a GIF here and the page keeps the animation.

Does this icon maker upload my picture?

No. Cropping, resizing and GIF compression run inside your browser. The file never leaves your device.

Why does my server icon look cut off?

Discord rounds the icon into a circle, so the corners of a square picture disappear. Use the dashed circle on the crop preview to keep logos and faces inside, or switch to Fit to shrink the whole picture inside the square.

Is there a file size limit for server icons?

Discord does not publish one. This page keeps icons under 10 MB, the same as avatars, as a safe margin. A 512 x 512 still is usually well under 1 MB.

Should I use PNG or GIF?

Use PNG for a still icon, since it keeps soft edges and transparency. Use GIF only for an animated icon, which needs Boost Level 1. This page picks the format for you based on the file you choose.
