Discord Sticker Maker
Three reasons Discord turns a sticker down
Sticker uploads fail for a short list of reasons, and the error does not always say which one. This page checks all three before you download.
- The size is not exactly 320 × 320. Emoji can be smaller than the maximum. Stickers cannot: 300 × 300 or 512 × 512 is wrong. The crop here always writes 320 × 320, whatever you feed it.
- The file is over 512 KB. An animated sticker is 320 × 320 times every frame, so even a short clip adds up fast. The page tries full quality first and only cuts colors or frames when it has to, then tells you what it cut.
- The animation runs longer than 5 seconds. Anything past 5 seconds is left out, and the Start at and Length sliders let you choose which part stays.
A fourth snag is not a rejection but looks like one: an APNG sticker can look still if you preview it in the wrong place. See the questions at the bottom.
Stickers, emoji and chat GIFs side by side
The three get mixed up because they can all hold the same picture. The limits are very different. Checked against Discord's pages on October 26, 2026.
| Sticker | Custom emoji | GIF posted in chat | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel size | Exactly 320 × 320 | Up to 128 × 128 | Any |
| File size | 512 KB (help page), 512 KiB (developer docs) | 256 KB | 20 MB on a free account |
| Formats | PNG and APNG (help page); developer docs add GIF and Lottie | JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF | GIF |
| Animation length | 5 seconds at most | No limit published | No limit published |
| Free slots per server | 5 | 50 | Not a slot |
| Sources | Sticker tips, developer docs, Stickers FAQ | Custom emoji, Boosting FAQ | File Attachments FAQ |
The sticker page also says stickers need a name and a related emoji, the description is optional, and desktop chat shows stickers at 160 × 160. Lottie stickers are only for verified and partnered servers, so this page does not make them.
APNG or GIF? Discord's two answers
Discord's help article for sticker creators says animated stickers are APNG and still stickers are PNG. Its developer documentation, which describes what the upload accepts, lists GIF as well. We could not settle which one wins for every account, so the page does this:
- APNG is the default. It is the format the help article names, it keeps soft see-through edges, and it saves as a .png file.
- GIF is one tap away. It can pack smaller for clips cut from video, because gifsicle's lossy mode blurs away grain. If Discord refuses it, switch back to APNG.
- Still pictures are always PNG. Both Discord pages agree on that one.
One video clip, three stickers
The hard case for stickers is a clip from a video: every pixel changes in every frame. We turned the first 8 seconds of our sample clip into a 480 × 270 GIF at 15 frames a second (7.2 MB) and ran it through this page in Chrome on a desktop, Fill crop, nothing else changed.
| Setting | Result | What it gave up |
|---|---|---|
| APNG, first 5 seconds | 455.7 KB, 19 frames | 48 colors, every 4th frame |
| APNG, Length 2.5 seconds | 494.6 KB, 13 frames | 128 colors, every 3rd frame |
| GIF, first 5 seconds | 472.7 KB, 25 frames | Compression level 200, 128 colors, every 3rd frame |
All three passed the 320 × 320, 512 KB and 5 second checks. The pattern is the useful part: for a busy clip, a shorter sticker keeps more color, and GIF keeps more frames. Flat art is a different story. The animated cat sample (16 frames) fits as a 256 color APNG at 252.9 KB, and a drawn test animation with a transparent background fit in full color, lossless, at 106.7 KB.
Drawing for 160 pixels
The file is 320 × 320, but people see it at about half that in chat. The previews above show that size on dark and light backgrounds.
- Fill the square. Stickers have no frame or circle crop, so empty margins just make the subject smaller. Crop tight.
- Cut the background out. A transparent sticker sits on the chat like a cutout and works in both themes. Use Fit on a cutout to keep the whole thing in view.
- Make text big. Small words turn to mush at chat size. Check the chat preview before you upload.
- Keep the motion short. One clear action that loops reads better than 5 seconds of footage, and it costs fewer bytes.
Known gaps
- We could not confirm that Discord takes GIF stickers on every server. That is why APNG is the default.
- APNG has no lossy mode, so to fit, the page cuts colors and then frames. A busy clip at 48 colors shows banding.
- Dropping frames keeps the speed but looks choppier. The page says when it does this.
- No Lottie stickers, and no text or drawing tools. Bring a finished picture.
- Animated WebP uses only its first frame. HEIC photos need converting first.
- Long, large GIFs take a lot of memory. Phones may need a shorter file.
- The chat previews are a close guide, not a copy of Discord's app.
Making a full set? The emoji maker makes 128 × 128 custom emoji, the GIF compressor fits GIFs for chat and avatars, and the Discord tools page lists every limit.

Sticker questions
What size does a Discord sticker have to be?
Exactly 320 x 320 pixels and no bigger than 512 KB. Discord's sticker tips page says 512KB and its developer docs say 512 KiB, so this page keeps every file under 512,000 bytes, which passes both. Animated stickers can run up to 5 seconds.
Can a Discord sticker be a GIF?
Discord gives two answers. Its Tips for Sticker Creators page lists APNG for animated stickers and PNG for still ones, while its developer docs list PNG, APNG, GIF and Lottie as upload formats. This page makes APNG by default and offers GIF as an option. If Discord refuses a GIF sticker, make the APNG instead.
Why does my APNG sticker look frozen?
Discord's sticker tips say APNG stickers do not render properly if you send the file through the chat bar's upload button. Upload it in Server Settings, then Stickers, where the upload window shows the animation. An APNG file also ends in .png, which is normal.
How many custom stickers can a server have?
Discord's Custom Stickers FAQ gives every server 5 sticker slots for free. Boost Level 1 raises that to 15, Level 2 to 30 and Level 3 to 60.
What if my GIF is longer than 5 seconds?
The page keeps 5 seconds of it. Use Start at to pick where those 5 seconds begin and Length to make the sticker shorter. Shorter stickers keep more frames and more colors inside 512 KB.
Can I make a still sticker?
Yes. Choose a PNG, JPG, WebP or AVIF picture and the page makes a 320 x 320 PNG, which Discord accepts for static stickers. Transparent backgrounds are kept.
Does this sticker maker upload my files?
No. Cropping, trimming and compression all run in your browser. Your picture never leaves your device.
