How to use the easy grader

  1. Enter the total. Type the number of questions on the test, or the total points if questions carry different marks.
  2. Read the chart. Each row shows how many were wrong, how many were right, the percent, and the letter grade.
  3. Check one paper fast. Type the number wrong in the Number wrong box. The score appears at once and the row is highlighted in the chart.
  4. Print or copy. Print the chart to keep next to your stack of papers, or copy it into a spreadsheet.

Worked examples

TestWrongScoreLetter (A to F)
20 questions195%A
20 questions385%B
25 questions484%B
30 questions293%A
50 points7.585%B

The math is simple: percent = (total minus wrong) / total x 100. For 30 questions with 2 wrong, that is 28 / 30 x 100 = 93.33%, shown as 93% with no decimals.

Letter grade scales

The default scale is the common US one: A is 90% and up, B is 80 to 89, C is 70 to 79, D is 60 to 69, and F is below 60. The plus and minus scale splits each band: A+ 97 and up, A 93, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80, and so on down to D- at 60. Schools set their own cut offs, so check yours. The letter follows the percent as shown in the chart, so with no decimals 89.5% shows as 90% and gets an A.

Half and quarter points

Choose Half points or Quarter points when you give partial credit. The chart then has a row for every half or quarter point wrong, such as 2.5 wrong. The total has to be a whole number of those steps, which any whole number total is.

Questions

What is an easy grader?

An easy grader, or EZ grader, is a chart that shows the percent and letter grade for every possible number of wrong answers on a test. Teachers use it to grade papers quickly without doing the math each time.

How do I use the EZ grader?

Type the number of questions or points on the test. The chart lists every number wrong with the matching percent and letter grade. Type a number in the Number wrong box to see one score straight away.

How is the percent worked out?

Percent is the number right divided by the total, times 100. For example, 3 wrong out of 20 is 17 right, and 17 / 20 x 100 = 85%.

What letter grade scale does it use?

By default A is 90% and up, B is 80%, C is 70%, D is 60%, and F is below 60%. You can switch to a plus and minus scale or turn letters off. Your school's cut offs may differ.

Can I give half points?

Yes. Set Count wrong in to Half points or Quarter points and the chart adds rows such as 2.5 wrong.

Can I print the grade chart?

Yes. Press Print chart to print only the chart, or Copy chart to paste it into a spreadsheet as columns.
