Drop HEIC or HEIF files here or click to choose. Several files are fine.
Decoded locally with a WASM HEIC decoder. Nothing is uploaded.
Decoder: heic2any 0.0.4 (MIT; uses libheif). Runs entirely in your browser.
Why PNG instead of JPG for HEIC
HEIC is Apple's efficient camera default. Many Windows apps, older CMSs, and design pipelines still want PNG or JPG. JPG would shrink the file again with lossy compression and cannot keep transparency. PNG is lossless after decode, so you can crop, mask, or composite without stacking another JPEG generation. If you specifically need JPG from HEIC, that is a different converter category; this page is HEIC to PNG only.
HEIC vs PNG vs JPG
Quick comparison for still photos after you leave the phone:
| Format | Compression | Transparency | Typical size vs HEIC | Compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HEIC | Efficient, often lossy HEVC stills | Possible in HEIF family | Baseline (smallest of the three for photos) | Strong on Apple; weak in many Windows and web tools |
| PNG | Lossless | Yes (alpha) | Often many times larger than HEIC for photos | Nearly universal in apps and CMSs |
| JPG | Lossy | No | Usually larger than HEIC, smaller than PNG for photos | Universal; fine for delivery, not for lossless edits |
What we measured on a sample
On 2026-10-13 we ran this page's decoder (heic2any 0.0.4 in Chromium) on a public sample HEIC: 41,389 bytes in, 1,706,392 bytes PNG out, 1440×960, about 380 ms on the test machine. A second sample HEIC of 293,608 bytes became a 3,482,511 byte PNG at the same resolution. Those numbers are from our own browser run, not vendor marketing. Your files will differ with resolution, detail, and how the phone encoded the HEIC.
iPhone formats and sharing
On iPhone you can switch the camera away from HEIC under Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible, which stores JPEG instead. When you share or AirDrop, iOS often offers a compatible format to the other device or app, so recipients may never see HEIC. Files copied over USB, cloud sync, or a direct filesystem dump still arrive as .heic. This tool is for those files.
What this converter drops
Live Photos: motion/video companion is not exported; you get still PNG(s). HDR / gain maps are not preserved as HDR PNG. EXIF and other metadata are stripped by the decode and canvas path. Very large images can exhaust tab memory, especially on phones; convert fewer files at a time if the tab stalls. Burst or multi-image containers: use the radio above for primary only or every still. Animated HEIC sequences are not turned into animated PNG.
FAQ
Does this HEIC to PNG converter upload my photos?
No. Decode runs in your browser with a local WASM decoder. Files never leave the tab.
Why PNG instead of JPG?
PNG is lossless and can keep transparency. JPG is smaller for photos but drops alpha and recompresses. This page targets PNG; HEIC to JPG is a different tool category.
What happens with Live Photos or multi-image HEIC?
Live Photo motion is dropped. For containers with several stills, choose primary image only or export every still as its own PNG.
Is EXIF or HDR preserved?
No. Canvas and the decoder path strip EXIF and do not preserve HDR gain maps. You get a standard 8-bit-style PNG suitable for CMS and design apps.
