Drop WebP files here or click to choose. Several files are fine.
Decoded locally with canvas. Nothing is uploaded.
Why convert WebP here
Some editors and email clients still mishandle WebP. This page decodes WebP in the browser with the Canvas API and exports PNG bytes you can download. Nothing is uploaded to ToolPetal.
Batch mode (when multiple files are selected) processes each image client-side. Large images need enough memory in the tab.
Worked example: converting a photo
Drop a hero.webp photo, wait for the preview, then download hero.png. Transparency in WebP becomes PNG alpha when the browser decode path preserves it. Animated WebP is not a multi-frame PNG export; you typically get a single frame.
Limits
Conversion is lossy relative to the original encode only in the sense that you start from already-compressed WebP. PNG output is larger for photos. Extremely large dimensions may fail on low-memory devices. This is not Squoosh with per-channel tuning.
Quality and color
PNG export from a decoded bitmap uses the browser canvas color path. Color profiles and HDR WebP quirks may not match Photoshop. For print or brand-critical colors, verify samples on a calibrated display before batch-converting an entire library.
Clear the file list when you finish on a shared computer. Decoded bitmaps remain in memory until the tab is closed or you hit Clear.
Worked example: a transparent logo and file size
A transparent WebP logo saved from a website converts to a PNG that keeps the transparent background, which a JPG cannot do. Expect the PNG to be larger than the WebP: PNG is lossless, so it stores every pixel of the decoded image, while the WebP may have been lossy. Converting cannot bring back detail that lossy WebP compression already removed.
Pitfalls
- Animated WebP. A PNG holds one frame, so only a single frame is kept.
- File size surprise. For photos, PNG files can be several times larger than WebP. Use the WebP to JPG converter for photos without transparency.
- Color profiles. Embedded color profiles may not be carried over, so colors can shift slightly on wide-gamut images.
FAQ
Does WebP to PNG upload images?
No. Decode and encode run in your browser.
Is animation preserved?
No. Expect a single still frame, not an animated PNG.
Why is the PNG bigger?
PNG is often larger than WebP for photographs. Use PNG when you need compatibility or lossless alpha, not minimum bytes.
Can I convert many files?
Yes when multi-select and download-all controls are available. Keep batches modest for browser memory.
When should I pick PNG over JPG?
Pick PNG for logos, screenshots, text, and anything with transparency. Pick JPG for photos where a smaller file matters more than perfect edges.
Why do some apps not open WebP files?
Older editors and upload forms predate WebP support. Converting to PNG gives a format almost everything opens.
