How JSON becomes rows
If you paste an array of objects, property names become CSV headers in first-seen order. Nested objects are stringified into a cell. Arrays of arrays become rows without a header row. A single object becomes one data row plus a header.
Values that contain commas, quotes, or newlines are quoted per CSV rules (quotes doubled inside). Decoding back to rich JSON is lossy for nested structures; keep JSON when you need nested fidelity.
Worked example: an array of flat objects
Input [{"name":"Ada","role":"Engineer"},{"name":"Lin","role":"Designer"}] downloads as:
name,role
Ada,Engineer
Lin,Designer
Each object becomes one row, and the keys of the objects become the header row.
Limits
This page does not fetch URLs. Huge pastes may stress the browser tab. Mixed schemas across array items produce sparse columns (missing keys become empty cells). Prefer a stable object shape before sharing CSVs with finance or ops teams.
Worked example: missing keys, commas and nested arrays
Input [{"id":1,"name":"Ana","tags":["a","b"]},{"id":2,"name":"Ben, Jr."}]. The CSV header is built from the keys. "Ben, Jr." contains a comma, so it must be wrapped in double quotes in the CSV. The second row has no tags, so that cell is empty. Nested arrays and objects do not fit in one cell cleanly; check how they appear in the output and flatten them first if you need separate columns.
Pitfalls
- Excel and leading zeros. Opening the CSV in Excel can turn
00123into123and long IDs into scientific notation. Import the column as text, or use the CSV to Excel converter. - Not an array. CSV needs a list of rows. If your JSON is an object that wraps the array, such as
{"data":[...]}, paste just the array. - Formula injection. Cells that start with
=,+,-, or@can run as formulas in spreadsheets. Be careful with untrusted data.
FAQ
Does JSON to CSV upload my data?
No. Conversion and download happen in the browser.
What JSON shapes work best?
An array of flat objects with the same keys. Nested objects are stringified; deeply nested trees belong in JSON, not CSV.
Can I convert CSV back to JSON?
Not on this page. Use a CSV import in your app or a dedicated CSV-to-JSON tool. Nested structure is already lost once flattened.
Why are some cells quoted?
CSV quoting protects commas, quotes, and line breaks inside values so spreadsheet apps do not split them into extra columns.
What happens when objects have different keys?
The columns should cover the keys found across rows, and rows missing a key get an empty cell. Check the header row after converting.
Why do non-English characters look broken in Excel?
Older Excel versions guess the encoding of CSV files. Use Data, From Text/CSV, and pick UTF-8, or convert to an .xlsx file.
