CSV dialects this page accepts

Paste or open a .csv (and related text delimiters the UI allows). The parser splits rows and cells, then builds a spreadsheet file in the browser for download as .xlsx. No file is uploaded to ToolPetal.

Quoted fields with commas inside them are handled with standard CSV quoting rules. Encoding is treated as UTF-8 text from the textarea or file reader.

Worked example: a two-column CSV to one sheet

CSV:

name,role
Ada,Engineer
Lin,Designer

Download yields a workbook with one sheet and those three rows (header plus two people). Open it in Excel, Sheets, or LibreOffice to confirm column splits.

Limits

Macros, multiple sheets, and Excel-specific formatting are out of scope. Extremely large CSVs may hit memory limits. If Excel still misreads separators, check regional delimiter settings (comma vs semicolon) and UTF-8 import options.

Worked delimiter pitfalls

European Excel builds often expect semicolons. If columns land in one cell, switch the delimiter in the source CSV or use Excel Text Import with the correct separator. This converter assumes comma-separated values unless the UI offers another delimiter.

After download, spot-check that leading zeros in ZIP codes or phone numbers survived. Excel may coerce numeric-looking text unless you import columns as text in the desktop wizard.

Worked example: leading zeros and quoted commas

A CSV row 00123,"Smith, Ann",2026-10-14 has three columns: the quotes keep the comma inside the name. Opened directly in Excel, 00123 often becomes 123. Converting to .xlsx lets you check columns before sharing, and the file opens the same way for everyone instead of depending on each person's import settings.

Pitfalls

FAQ

Does CSV to Excel upload my spreadsheet?

No. Parsing and .xlsx creation run locally.

Why does Excel show weird characters?

Often an encoding mismatch. Prefer UTF-8 CSV and use Excel's import wizard when auto-detect fails.

Are formulas preserved?

CSV has no formulas. Cells become values only.

Multiple sheets?

This converter targets a single sheet from one CSV table.

Why did my long ID numbers turn into 1.23E+15?

Excel stores numbers with 15 significant digits and shows long ones in scientific notation. Keep IDs as text so digits are not lost.

Is my CSV uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser and the .xlsx file is created on your device.
