How to view and remove photo metadata
- Open a photo. Choose a file or drop it on the box. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, TIFF and AVIF files can be read.
- Read the summary. The top table shows the camera, lens, date taken, exposure, software and orientation. If the photo has a GPS location, a warning appears with a link to the spot on a map.
- Look at every field. All metadata lists each group (Image, Exif, GPS, IPTC, XMP and the thumbnail) with every field and value.
- Remove it. For a JPG, PNG or WebP, press Remove metadata and then Download clean copy. The tool reads the new file again and tells you what is left.
What gets removed
| File | Removed | Kept |
|---|---|---|
| JPG | Exif (including GPS and the thumbnail), XMP, IPTC, comments and other app blocks | The image data untouched, the JFIF header, the color profile, and optionally the orientation tag |
| PNG | Text chunks (author, comment, software), eXIf and the time stamp | The image data untouched, the color profile, gamma and pixel size |
| WebP | EXIF and XMP chunks | The image data untouched, the color profile and animation |
The picture itself is not re-compressed, so there is no loss of quality and the clean file is a little smaller than the original. HEIC, TIFF, AVIF and GIF files can be viewed here but not cleaned.
Example
A phone photo might show: Camera Apple iPhone 13, Taken 2024-05-01 14:03:22, Exposure 1/250 s, f/1.6, ISO 50, 5.1 mm, and Location 39.739333, -104.984. After Remove metadata, with the orientation tag kept, the check reads: Fields still found: 1 (the orientation tag you chose to keep).
About orientation
Many cameras save a photo sideways and add an orientation tag that tells apps to turn it. If that tag is removed, some apps show the photo on its side. That is why, for a JPG with a turned orientation, the tool offers to keep only that one tag. It holds no personal information.
Good to know
Many social networks and messaging apps remove location data when you post, but email, cloud links, file transfers and many forums send the original file with everything in it. Removing metadata does not change what is visible in the picture, such as a street sign in the background.
Questions
How do I see the metadata of a photo?
Open the photo with the file picker or drop it on the box. The tool lists the camera, date, settings and GPS location, and every Exif, XMP and IPTC field it finds.
How do I remove EXIF data from a photo?
Open a JPG, PNG or WebP and press Remove metadata, then Download clean copy. The tool checks the new file again and shows how many fields are left.
Does removing metadata reduce quality?
No. Only the metadata blocks are taken out. The image data is copied as it is and is not re-compressed.
Can it show where a photo was taken?
Yes, if the photo has GPS data. The tool shows the latitude and longitude and a link to the spot on OpenStreetMap.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The file is read and cleaned in your browser. Only if you press the map link is the location sent to OpenStreetMap, to show the map.
Why does my photo turn sideways after removing metadata?
Some photos rely on an orientation tag to display the right way up. For JPG files the tool keeps that one tag by default, so the photo stays the right way up.
Which file types are supported?
JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, TIFF and AVIF can be viewed. Metadata can be removed from JPG, PNG and WebP files.
