Date to Roman numerals
How to use the Roman numeral converter
- Type a number in the Number box, like 1994. The Roman numeral MCMXCIV appears next to it, with the pieces it is built from.
- Or type a Roman numeral in the Roman numeral box, like XLII, to get 42. Lowercase works too. If the numeral is not written the standard way, like IIII, the tool says so and shows the usual form.
- Turn a date into Roman numerals. Pick the date, the order and the separator. October 28, 2026 in US order with dots is X.XXVIII.MMXXVI.
How Roman numerals work
| Number | Roman numeral |
|---|---|
| 1 | I |
| 5 | V |
| 10 | X |
| 50 | L |
| 100 | C |
| 500 | D |
| 1,000 | M |
Write the letters from largest to smallest and add them up: MDCLXVI is 1000 + 500 + 100 + 50 + 10 + 5 + 1 = 1666. When a smaller letter comes before a bigger one, subtract it instead. Only six pairs are used this way: IV (4), IX (9), XL (40), XC (90), CD (400) and CM (900). A letter is never repeated more than three times in a row, so 4 is IV, not IIII, and 40 is XL, not XXXX.
Worked examples
- 1994 = 1000 + 900 + 90 + 4 = M + CM + XC + IV = MCMXCIV.
- 2026 = 1000 + 1000 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1 = MMXXVI.
- 49 = 40 + 9 = XL + IX = XLIX. IL is not used, because I can only come before V and X.
- 3,999 = MMMCMXCIX, the largest number in standard Roman numerals.

Numbers above 3,999
Standard Roman numerals stop at 3,999. For bigger numbers, a line drawn over a letter (a vinculum) multiplies it by 1,000, so V with a line over it is 5,000 and M with a line over it is 1,000,000. Tick the box above the result to use this style. The line is added with a combining overline character, which shows correctly in most fonts but can look slightly off in some.
