8 second, 4.2 MB test clip we made, loaded only if you tap it. It already fits 20 MB, so pick 10 MB or a custom size to watch it shrink.
Pick the size limit
Limits from Discord's File Attachments FAQ, checked October 25, 2026. Discord says it is trying out different limits, so yours may differ; the upload box in the app has the final word. Nitro allows 1 GB, but this page stops at 500 MB because the browser holds the whole result in memory.
Resolution
Trim (optional)
Minutes and seconds, like 0:45 or 1:02.5. A shorter clip gets more quality per second.
Compress it
Choose a video first.
You changed a setting. Press Compress video again to use it.
Download MP4- Open the channel or DM where you want it.
- Drag the MP4 into the message box, or press + and pick it.
- Press Enter. Discord plays MP4 right in the chat.
Runs in your browser with FFmpeg 5.1 through ffmpeg.wasm 0.12.10 and x264 (GPL: license and source notes). The engine (about a 10 MB download) loads from this site once you pick a video, and your browser usually keeps it for next time. Nothing is uploaded.
Compressing a video for Discord, start to finish
- Choose your video. MP4, MOV from an iPhone, WebM, MKV and most other formats work. The page reads its length, size and frame rate.
- Pick the size limit. 20 MB is the free limit. Pick 50 MB for Nitro Basic, 100 MB for a server at Boost Level 3, or type your own number. 10 MB is there for older apps and other sites with a lower cap.
- Choose a resolution, and trim if you like. Auto picks 1080p, 720p, 480p or 360p from the bitrate the size allows. Trim to the part you need, or turn off the sound to give the picture more room.
- Compress and download. A progress bar shows how far along it is, and Cancel stops it. When it is done, play it on the page, check the size, and download the MP4.
Discord upload limits (checked October 25, 2026)
| Account or server | Upload limit per file | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 20 MB (10 MB until August 2026) | File Attachments FAQ |
| Nitro Basic | 50 MB | File Attachments FAQ |
| Nitro | 1 GB | File Attachments FAQ |
| Server at Boost Level 2 | 50 MB for everyone | Server Boosting FAQ |
| Server at Boost Level 3 | 100 MB for everyone | Server Boosting FAQ |
Discord says it is experimenting with upload limits, so a few accounts may see other numbers. This page counts 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes and aims a few percent under the limit, which leaves room whichever way Discord counts.
How the size is worked out
File size is bitrate times length. The page takes the limit you picked, keeps 4.5 percent spare for the MP4 index, sets aside room for the sound (128 kbps, or less when space is tight), keeps another 5 percent back because the encoder never hits a bitrate exactly, and gives the rest to the picture.
Worked example. A 60 second clip with a 20 MB limit: 20,000,000 bytes is 160,000 kilobits. Spread over 60 seconds and less the 4.5 percent spare, that is about 2,540 kbps. Take 128 kbps for sound, keep 5 percent back, and about 2,290 kbps is left for the picture. That suits 720p, so that is what Auto picks. The same clip at 10 MB gets 96 kbps sound and about 1,110 kbps for the picture, and Auto drops to 480p.
The video is made with x264 using a capped bitrate, then the page checks the real size. If it still comes out over, it runs once more at a lower bitrate.
Test results
We ran our own test clips through this page on October 25, 2026 and checked every output with ffprobe: each one was under its target and played to the end. Times are from a desktop test computer; phones take longer.
| Test clip | Target | Result | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 s, 1080p MP4, 33.2 MB | 20 MB | 18.4 MB, 1080p | 84 s (Chrome) |
| 20 s, 1080p MP4, 33.2 MB | 10 MB | 9.21 MB, 720p | 56 s (Chrome) |
| 12 s, portrait 1080 x 1920 MOV, 26.5 MB | 10 MB | 9.27 MB, 1080 x 1920 | 48 s (Safari engine) |
| 10 s, 720p MP4, 11.6 MB | 5 MB | 4.66 MB, 720p | 22 s (Safari engine) |
| 6 s, HEVC MOV like an iPhone makes, 4.5 MB | 1 MB | 0.91 MB, 480p | 8 s (Chrome) |
| 8 s, 60 fps WebM, no sound, 4.6 MB | 1.5 MB | 1.35 MB, 480p at 30 fps | 10 s (Chrome) |
The clips were synthetic (moving patterns and test tones), which are harder to compress than most phone videos.
Where this falls short
- It is slower than a desktop app. Your browser runs one copy of FFmpeg on a single CPU core, without the graphics chip. Long 1080p and 4K videos can take many minutes.
- Phones have less memory. Very large files (over 1 GB or so) can fail on a phone; a computer handles them better.
- HDR video from newer iPhones is turned into standard range and can look a little flatter.
- Only the first video track and the first sound track are kept. Subtitles and chapters are dropped.
- Very long videos at small sizes cannot look good. The page tells you when the bitrate would be too low and how short to trim it.
Making something else for your server? The Discord GIF compressor shrinks GIFs for emoji, stickers and chat, the soundboard maker turns a video's sound into a 5 second clip, and the Discord tools page has every Discord limit in one table.

Questions about compressing videos for Discord
What is the Discord video size limit?
Discord's File Attachments FAQ says free accounts can upload files up to 20 MB, Nitro Basic up to 50 MB and Nitro up to 1 GB. The free limit went up from 10 MB in August 2026. Servers at Boost Level 2 allow 50 MB and Level 3 allow 100 MB for everyone. Discord says it is testing different limits, so check the upload box in your app.
Why is my video still too big for Discord?
Usually the clip is too long for the size you picked. Every second needs some bits, so at 20 MB a few minutes of video only gets a low bitrate. The page checks the finished file and tries once more at a lower bitrate if it lands over, and tells you if it still does not fit. Trimming, removing sound, a lower resolution or a bigger size limit fixes it.
Should I use MP4 or WebM for Discord?
MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound. Discord plays it inline on desktop, the web and phones, and it is what this page makes. Discord also accepts WebM, but older iPhones and some apps play it less reliably, and the page would be slower making it.
How long does compressing take?
It depends on the video and your device, since everything runs on it. In our tests on a desktop computer, a 10 second 720p clip took about 20 seconds and a 20 second 1080p clip about one to one and a half minutes. Phones are slower. Picking 720p or 480p and trimming makes it faster.
Why does it need a modern browser?
The compressor is FFmpeg built for WebAssembly, running in a background worker so the page stays responsive. That needs WebAssembly, Web Workers and enough memory, which current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari have. Very old browsers and some in-app browsers cannot run it, and the page says so if that happens.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The video stays on your device. The page downloads the compression engine from toolpetal.com once, then reads your file and writes the new MP4 inside your browser. The new file also has location and other metadata removed.
Will compressing lower the quality?
Some, since the file has to get smaller. Auto picks the resolution for the bitrate you can afford: a sharp 720p usually looks better than a blocky 1080p. Short clips at 20 MB or more often look close to the original.
