GST 2.0 slab heights (tax on Rs 10,000 exclusive)
Not tax advice. Does not apply compensation cess, reverse charge, or composition rates. Confirm HSN/SAC on the current notification.
When CGST/SGST vs IGST
Place of supply drives the split, not the GST rate itself.
- Intra-state (same state / UT): total GST splits equally into CGST + SGST (or UTGST). At 18%, that is 9% + 9%.
- Inter-state (other state, or typical import IGST path): the full tax sits in IGST at the chosen rate.
The tool only applies that split. It does not compute compensation cess, reverse charge, composition rates, or e-invoice validation. Confirm HSN/SAC on the notification you invoice under. Not tax advice. Disclaimer.
GST 2.0 slab walkthrough (5 / 18 / 40)
Presets follow GST 2.0-style slabs (effective 22 Sep 2025 on this page’s copy) plus leftover niche rates. The rate box is always editable.
| Rate | Typical use on this page | Add GST on Rs 10,000 (tax) |
|---|---|---|
| 5% | Essentials preset | Rs 500 → inclusive Rs 10,500 |
| 18% | Standard (default) | Rs 1,800 → inclusive Rs 11,800 |
| 40% | Sin / luxury preset | Rs 4,000 → inclusive Rs 14,000 |
| 0% / 0.25% / 3% / 12% / 28% | Nil, rough diamonds, gold, some bricks/tiles, pan masala/tobacco leftover | Use the preset or type a custom % |
Slabs can change. Treat the dropdown as a convenience, not an official rate chart.
Add GST vs remove GST
Add (exclusive in): tax = amount × rate/100, inclusive = amount + tax. For quick “what is X% of Y” checks outside GST slabs, see the percentage calculator.
Remove (inclusive in): exclusive = amount ÷ (1 + rate/100), tax = amount − exclusive.
Example at 18% with Rs 10,000: add → tax Rs 1,800, inclusive Rs 11,800 (intra: CGST = SGST = Rs 900). Remove with the same Rs 10,000 as MRP → exclusive ≈ Rs 8,474.58, tax ≈ Rs 1,525.42. Mixing exclusive and inclusive figures by 18% on a large PO line is a common spreadsheet error: pick the mode that matches the figure you typed. For withholding on payments rather than invoice GST, see the TDS calculator.
FAQ
How do I add GST vs remove GST?
Add GST (exclusive): tax = amount × rate/100, inclusive total = amount + tax. Remove GST (inclusive / reverse): exclusive = amount ÷ (1 + rate/100), tax = amount − exclusive. Pick the mode that matches whether your figure already includes GST.
What GST rates does this calculator use?
Presets follow GST 2.0 (effective 22 Sep 2025): 0%, 5%, 18%, and 40%, plus leftover niche rates still in force: 0.25% (rough diamonds), 3% (gold/jewellery), 12% (some bricks/tiles), 28% (pan masala and tobacco until a later notification). The rate box is editable. Slabs can change; this is not an official rate chart.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?
Intra-state supplies split GST equally into CGST and SGST (or UTGST). Inter-state supplies and imports use IGST at the full rate. The calculator applies that split only; it does not apply cess, reverse charge, or composition-scheme rates.
Are invoice amounts uploaded?
No. Amount, rate, add/remove mode, and intra/inter split run in your browser. Nothing is sent to ToolPetal.
