Target length, not magic SEO
Meta descriptions do not directly rank pages the way unique primary content does, but they influence the snippet people see. Aim near 150 to 160 characters for many locales so the SERP rarely truncates mid-thought. This page counts characters (and related cues) as you edit.
Write for the click: include the promise of the page and a concrete outcome. Avoid stuffing every synonym into one sentence.
Worked example: rewriting a tool page description
Weak: Best tools tools tools for SEO and more.
Stronger: Free browser-only HTML formatter that beautifies or minifies markup without uploading your code. That line states the job, the privacy angle, and stays in a typical desktop snippet budget.
Limits
Google may rewrite snippets from page text. A perfect length here is not a guarantee of what appears. Do not duplicate the title verbatim. This tool does not fetch your live URL or write descriptions in bulk from a crawl.
Worked character budget
Count the stronger example on this page: it states the job (HTML formatter), the mode (beautify or minify), and the privacy promise (no upload) in one sentence. If you need a brand suffix, shorten the verb phrase rather than cutting the differentiator.
Worked example: a local business page
Weak: "Welcome to our website. We offer many services." Stronger, for a dental clinic page: "Same-week dental cleanings in Austin. Evening slots, upfront prices, and most insurance accepted. Book online in two minutes." It names the service, place, and a reason to click, in about 125 characters.
Pitfalls
- Same description on every page. Duplicates make pages look alike in results. Write one per page.
- Expecting it to be used as written. Google often rewrites snippets from page text when it matches the query better.
- Keyword lists. The description is not a ranking factor; write it for the person reading the result.
FAQ
Does this upload my description?
No. Counting and editing stay in the browser.
Ideal length?
Many SEOs aim near 150 to 160 characters for Latin-script desktop snippets. Mobile may truncate earlier. Prefer a complete thought over hitting an exact number.
Do meta descriptions affect rankings?
They are not a strong direct ranking factor. They still matter for click-through when shown.
Should every page have a unique description?
Yes when practical. Duplicated descriptions waste the chance to match different intents.
Does the meta description affect rankings?
Google has said it is not used as a ranking signal. It can affect whether people click, which is why it is still worth writing.
Why does Google show different text than my description?
Google picks the snippet that best answers the search, which can be text from the page. A specific, accurate description is more likely to be used.
