How the tags will look, plus a simple share card.
Tags that usually matter
Minimum useful set: og:title, og:type, og:image (absolute HTTPS URL), og:url, plus a short og:description. Twitter card tags mirror those for platforms that still read them. If og:url carries query params, percent-encode values with the URL encoder.
Length and image size
Keep titles near 60 characters and descriptions roughly 110-200 (draft length with the word counter if you prefer words over characters). Large OG images (1200×630 class) crop more predictably than tiny logos; pick brand hex/RGB with the color converter before you design the canvas. Paste the generated tags into <head>, then re-scrape with each network’s debugger.
Worked example: a blog post share card
For a post at https://example.com/blog/pricing-page, set og:title to the headline (about 60 characters), og:type to article, og:url to the canonical URL, og:image to a 1200×630 PNG at an absolute https address, and a one-sentence og:description. Paste the tags into the head, deploy, then use the Facebook Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn Post Inspector to force a re-scrape. Old previews are cached until you do.
Checking a page that is already live
Paste the page URL into Check a URL. The report lists each tag it found and flags the ones that change how a share looks: a missing or relative og:image, an image that does not answer with an image file, a missing twitter:card, an og:url that differs from the page's canonical, and duplicate tags. Missing twitter:title, twitter:description, or twitter:image is only a note, because X falls back to the matching og: tags. The fields below are filled from the page, so you can fix a value and copy the corrected tag set.
Pitfalls
- Relative image paths.
/img/card.pngis not resolved by many crawlers. Use the full https URL. - Image behind login, hotlink protection, or robots.txt blocking. The crawler must be able to fetch the image anonymously.
- og:url different from the canonical. Shares then split across two URLs. Keep them identical.
- Tags injected only by JavaScript. Most share crawlers do not run scripts, so tags must be in the HTML the server sends.
FAQ
What is an Open Graph generator?
An Open Graph generator builds the og:title, og:description, og:url, og:image, and og:type meta tags that Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, and other crawlers read when a URL is shared. This page also outputs a twitter:card tag.
How long should og:title and og:description be?
Keep og:title around 60 characters so it is less likely to truncate. Aim for about 110-200 characters in og:description. Networks still crop by pixel width, so shorter is safer.
Which Open Graph fields are required?
og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url are the four required properties. og:description is strongly recommended. The image should be an absolute HTTPS URL, ideally at least 1200×630 pixels for large cards.
Does this tool upload my tags or preview image?
No. Markup is built in your browser, and the image URL is only used to preview the card on this page. Check a URL is the one exception: ToolPetal's server fetches the public page you name (and asks your og:image URL for its status and type), passes the result to your browser, and stores nothing.
Why does the old preview still show after I changed the tags?
Social networks cache previews. Re-scrape the URL in each network's debugger tool after deploying. Changing the image file name also helps when an old image is cached.
Do I still need Twitter card tags if I have Open Graph tags?
X falls back to Open Graph for title, description, and image when twitter tags are missing, but it needs twitter:card to choose the card layout. Keep at least twitter:card set.
How does Check a URL work?
ToolPetal's server requests the page once as ToolPetalBot/1.0, follows up to 5 redirects, and stops after 8 seconds or 1 MB. Your browser then reads every og: and twitter: meta tag, fills the generator fields, and lists anything missing, such as og:image or twitter:card. It also checks that og:image is an absolute URL that answers with an image. It reads the raw HTML only, so tags added by JavaScript are not seen, and Facebook or X may cache an older copy of your page. Each visitor gets 20 checks a minute.
